Croatia's hidden beachesRead all reviews about hidden beaches! Along the Croatia coast there are many hidden beaches specially on some of islands like Lastovo, Vis , Hvar, Cres, Kolocep island and Peljesac peninsula.
I call them hidden for a simple reason they are mostly unknown to tourist and some of them reachable only by boat. Far from the usual crowd of tourists these beaches are ideal place for a quiet holiday, far from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist destinations. They are a right place for sports and recreational opportunities - yachting, surfing, fishing, diving and children snorkeling.

Its well indented coast line hides many gravel and sandy beaches and 46 small islands and islets along its east and west coast. This island is an ideal place for peaceful vacations, an island of home-made food, fresh fish (famous spiny lobsters) and exquisite local wines.
There are several beautiful bays like Zaklopatica bay, Skrivena Luka (Hidden Harbor) bay or two lakes of unique beauty: Malo lago (Small Lake) and Velo lago (Big Lake), both sheltered from the wind. In the middle of the larger lake is an islet with Benedictine monastery, which can be visited by boat, which runs 4 times a day. The coasts are rocky, with many easily accessible beaches and small harbors.
To the west and east there are a number of islands of varying sizes, all uninhabited. There are many wooded, sandy beaches. In front of the north-eastern coast of the island of Lastovo is a group of unpopulated islets and reefs - Donji Skoljic (Lastovnjaci). Major islets are Cesvinica, Krucica, Saplun and Stomorina. The island of Saplun is famous for its beautiful sand hidden beaches often visited by yachts.
The only way to reach the island is by regular ferry service from Split to Ubli (Lastovo).
Vis island is my next destination, situated further offshore than any inhabited Adriatic island. For decades it was blocked for foreign tourists because of military reasons. It’s isolated position is the reason it has never been overrun by tourists, but it became a favorite island for many independent travelers, attracted by its charm and hidden beaches.
Vis has many splendid hidden beaches especially near Komiza and Vis towns. Komiza is mostly dotted with pebble beaches (Gusarica, Nova Posta, Velo Zalo and others), and some sandy beaches. Beautiful coves and beaches can be found also near Vis town. Nice sandy and pebble beaches (Parja, Rogacic, Mala and Vela Svitnja, etc.) are situated near the town. One of the most beautiful is Stoncica bay, often called Vis’ Hawaii, situated 6km from Vis town on the northeastern coast of the island. It is a beautiful sandy bay with an interesting restaurant with home atmosphere. There is a beautiful lighthouse and few private apartments for renting.
Island’s the biggest and the most beautiful sandy beach Zaglav is situated 10km south of Vis town, near Milna village. You can’t drive all the way to Zaglav. You have to leave your car in Milna and then walk for about 10 minutes along the coastline path. You can also use a taxi boat from Milna. In Zaglav there is a restaurant with a beautiful terrace and few houses offering apartments. The place is convenient for those who look for peace and isolation. Because of the sandy beach, Zaglav cove is often visited by yachts. Burgujac is a another smaller sandy beach not far from Zaglav.
Vis island is only reachable by daily ferry connection from Split harbor and during the summer season there are regular excursions trips from Hvar to Bisevo island.
Zavala is a small village and harbor, 13 km south of Jelsa, on the southern coast of Hvar, facing open sea. It is located on the local road that goes from Jelsa, through Pitve then through the long and dark tunnel (1400 m) with traffic lights because it’s so narrow two cars can’t pass each other. Zavala is situated about 80 m above the sea, two hours by motor-boat from Hvar.
Below the village there are several absolutely beautiful pebbly beaches with virginal clean and clear water where you can escape from the crowds of other island’s popular resorts. The most attractive beach is at Petrascica (with a cave). There is a little bar restaurant preparing freshly caught fish and refreshments. A perfect place to enjoy a cold beer or a glass of wine. Off the main season you can have the whole beach just for yourself.
In Zavala one can stay in private accommodation and if you’re looking for a true get away on the island the south side is the place to go. The place hasn’t been overcrowded by mass tourism and you can enjoy a real peace and connection with the nature.
The coats between Zavala and the village of Sveta Nedjelja (10 km west of Zavala) has several little hidden beaches coves with wonderful fine pebble beaches where you can find some privacy. Some of them are suitable for skinny dipping as well.
Another beautiful beach can be found in the village of Sveta Nedjelja itself. The beach is sandy (not really a sand, but close enough) and that is probably the reason why it so popular. It can be pretty crowded in high season.
Sveta Nedjelja is especially known by its wines which have the reputation of being the best wines of the island of Hvar, particularly the Plavac red wine. The village is situated below the highest peak on the island, Sveti Nikola (St. Nicholas).
(Long Island) - Telascica bay!
Dugi Otok is the biggest island of Zadar’s archipelago, 50km long and about 5km wide. It is quite distant from the coast, one hour and a half by ferry from Zadar and it remains one of those few places where you can enjoy tranquility even in high season, ideal for tourists that will appreciate the peace and the natural beauties.
Dugi Otok island hidden beaches vary from one area to another. In the zone of Sali there are mainly rocky with high cliffs. There are also some sandy beaches reachable only with boat and the one of the most beautiful, the beach of white sand (Saharun) in the southern part of island could be reached by car. Nudism is practiced almost everywhere except on the beaches too close to the villages. The main town, Sali, is an attractive fishing town with a summer cultural events and festival.
Natural park Telascica Bay is within biking distance from Sali. It is a 10km deep bay with islets and cliffs. A spectacular saltwater lake lies next to the bay - the water is warm and said to be curative, and you can swim there. You can enjoy the wildlife that abounds there, from pine to fig to olive to moufflon (a kind of wild sheep). Although the park is not commercialized, there are facilities for tourists providing fresh fish and local wine. Hidden beaches paradise indeed!
An unusual town built out of stone built on a 378 m high cliff, once it used to serve as a watchtower and a shelter. In the main square is konoba "Lubenicka loza" (Lubenice Lodge) a small tavern with local vine, cheeses, prosciutto. It has a spectacular view over the sea and islands from the village walls.
Lubenice beach
Down below at the foot of Lubenice (watermelon in Croatian) , there is a small bay with the most amazing beach of St. John (Sv. Ivan). It takes about 45 minutes to walk down and about one hour to climb back up. The beach is often visited by yachts. It is a virgin beach with clear water and aquatic life of an aquarium. Lubenice is a special, isolated place with a feel of mystery and solitude.
Zuljana is beautiful and attractive small village on the southern coast of the Peljesac Peninsula. It is located in a big and romantic bay, with one of the most beautiful pebble hidden beaches on the Adriatic. This is the famous Vucine beach. In the vicinity there are numerous other small sandy and pebbly beaches like Kremena, Grdni Do and other, all surrounded by thick pine forest and with absolutely crystal clean sea.
Many will say that Zuljana is the prettiest place on the peninsula, and its beaches are among the most beautiful on the Adriatic. Zuljana is especially loved by sport-fishing, sailing and diving enthusiasts.
There aren’t any hotels in Zuljana. One can stay in one of three camping sites or in private rooms and apartments.

The Elafiti islands, opposite Dubrovnik at the southern end of the country, with the beautiful, sandy hidden beaches, are approx. 20 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. There are fourteen islands in the Elafiti group. Only three of them are inhabited (Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan). There is a daily boat service to Dubrovnik which is just 7km away. Car-free island of Kolocep is the largest in the archipelago and it has some of the loveliest, secluded beaches in Europe. It is celebrated for its luxuriant subtropical vegetation and sandy coves.
There are two quaint and romantic settlements, in the two largest coves of the island: Gornje Celo and Donje Celo. Numerous sand, pebble and hidden beaches, together with many cozy restaurants, cafes enable you to truly relax, whether you plan to arrive with your loved one, family, friends or alone. Those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city will enjoy the pleasant promenades, beautiful beaches and numerous small bays, where they will be undisturbed. Kolocep is rated on the Internet as one of "the top ten world’s best resort islands".
